Number of Deaths from Counterfeit Medications Rises Sharply

Every year, several hundred thousand people worldwide die as a result of counterfeit medications. Recent investigations by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveal that the percentage of deaths associated with the use of unauthorized drugs has more than doubled. The agency also believes that the actual number of cases is likely even higher. The background: Some commonly counterfeited medications, such as those used to treat ADHD, are not included in the data.

While the consequences of the spread of illegal drugs were previously more noticeable in developing countries, they have become a global problem due to globalization and online commerce. Counterfeits pose various health risks, as they often either contain no active ingredient or have an incorrectly dosed one. In the worst cases, contaminants may be added. It is crucial for manufacturers, wholesalers, and pharmacies to work together to combat unauthorized drugs. First-opening protection, serialization, and supply chain security are three components ensuring greater patient safety.
